Prayer of Deliverance from Evil: Orthodox Christian Prayer for Spiritual Freedom and Protection
Understanding Deliverance in Orthodox Christianity
Deliverance is the God-given power to be freed from spiritual bondage, demonic oppression, and the influence of evil forces. The Orthodox Church has maintained a rich tradition of prayers for deliverance throughout its two-thousand-year history, rooted in Scripture, the teachings of the Church Fathers, and the authority given to believers through Christ’s victory over death and hell.
The Scriptures remind us that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). Through baptism, chrismation, and participation in the sacramental life of the Church, Orthodox Christians are equipped with divine grace to resist evil and stand firm in spiritual warfare.
Biblical Foundation for Deliverance
Derek Prince’s extensive biblical teaching on deliverance emphasizes key scriptural truths that align with Orthodox understanding:
- “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7)
- “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12)
- “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4)
- “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons” (Mark 16:17)
The Orthodox Church recognizes that Christ’s incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection have already secured victory over Satan and all demonic powers. Through participation in this victory, believers can experience true deliverance.
The Orthodox Prayer of Deliverance
This prayer should ideally be prayed under the guidance of a spiritual father or priest, or with their blessing. It draws upon Orthodox liturgical tradition while incorporating biblical principles of deliverance.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, who came to destroy the works of the devil and to give us abundant life, I come before You in humility and repentance.
I renounce all works of darkness, every sin that has given the enemy a foothold in my life, and every doorway I have opened to evil through disobedience, occult involvement, unforgiveness, or rebellion against Your holy will.
By the power of Your precious Blood shed on the Cross, I declare that I have been redeemed from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13). Through Your death and resurrection, You have triumphed over principalities and powers, making a public spectacle of them (Colossians 2:15).
I submit myself completely to You, O Lord. I resist the devil and all his works, and I command every evil spirit to leave me now in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ. “The Lord rebuke you!” (Jude 1:9)
I break every chain of bondage—whether of fear, addiction, oppression, depression, infirmity, or any spiritual attack. For “if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).
I put on the whole armor of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:14-17).
O Most Holy Theotokos, intercede for me. Holy angels and archangels, especially Michael the Archangel who cast Satan out of heaven, defend me in this battle.
Lord Jesus Christ, fill me now with Your Holy Spirit. Heal every wound, cleanse every defilement, and restore my soul. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me (Psalm 51:10).
I declare that no weapon formed against me shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), for greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
I thank You, Lord, for my deliverance. I am Yours, bought with a price, sealed with Your Holy Spirit, and protected by Your mighty hand.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
After Praying for Deliverance
Following deliverance prayer, Orthodox tradition emphasizes:
- Regular Confession and Holy Communion – Maintaining sacramental life strengthens spiritual protection
- Daily Prayer Rule – Consistent prayer life keeps the soul guarded
- Reading Scripture – The Word of God is a powerful weapon against darkness
- Fasting – As Christ taught, some demons are cast out only through prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21)
- Forgiveness – Unforgiveness opens doors to the enemy; we must forgive as we have been forgiven
- Spiritual Direction – Walking with a spiritual father provides accountability and wisdom
- Avoiding Occasions of Sin – Stay away from places, people, or practices that previously led to bondage
The Authority of the Believer
Derek Prince’s biblical teaching emphasizes that believers have been given authority over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). In Orthodox understanding, this authority flows from our union with Christ through the sacraments and our participation in the life of the Church, the Body of Christ.
We do not fight in our own strength but in the power of the Holy Spirit, trusting in the Name above all names—Jesus Christ, before whom every knee must bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth (Philippians 2:10).
May the Lord grant you complete deliverance, healing, and restoration. Glory to God for all things!
