What Is Salvation and From What Do We Need to Be Saved?

“From whom or from what do I need to be saved?” – someone might ask. There are indeed many people in various hardships and difficulties: the sick, the poor, the abandoned, those struggling with addiction. They certainly need someone to help and rescue them from their present circumstances. Yet the most important question is not what our current situation looks like, but what awaits us ahead.

Circumstances change. What guarantee is there that things will be well for you tomorrow, or a year from now? Trouble and misfortune come unexpectedly to everyone, as a rule. But even this is not the most fundamental matter – how and when we complete this brief earthly journey. Death does not end anyone’s existence.

A person’s true identity is not the body, but the soul that dwells within the body, and the spirit that dwells within the soul. God is Spirit, the Bible declares, and when He created humanity, He breathed a portion of His own spirit into our souls – and it is this that has made our souls immortal and made us beings who bear the likeness of God. Our personhood resides there, not in the body. At the moment of physical death, the soul and spirit lose their dwelling; yet consciousness and feeling remain, and are in fact heightened with extraordinary clarity.

There are therefore two kingdoms where all people spend their eternity. At the moment of departure, one arrives either in Heaven – a realm far more vast and incomparably more beautiful than this world – or in the realm of darkness, which is terrifyingly bleak. The greatest salvation is salvation from hell, from that eternal torment.

This is why one of the most vital questions we ought to ask ourselves in this life is: “What will become of me when I depart from here? Where am I going? Where will I spend eternity?”

Redemption and Salvation – What Does It Mean?

Salvation, or redemption, means being saved from God’s righteous judgement upon the sinner – for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). This is the universal condition of humankind.

Salvation is God’s free grace, not the result of human virtue or good works. God grants His forgiveness to those who place their complete trust in Jesus alone for their salvation. The Bible declares – without any other possible interpretation – that there is one God, one faith in Jesus, and one baptism of the Holy Spirit.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6

Jesus died for the sins of humanity on the cruel cross of Calvary. He rose from the dead, defeating Satan, and was seated at the right hand of the Father. His resurrection made salvation possible – for with His blood He has redeemed every man and woman who believes in Him. All evil – suffering, sickness, death – that we encounter in daily life originates from the enemy. Jesus came to strip the devil of his power and authority: to cancel our debt of sin and to restore our relationship with God.

God’s Grace and Mercy – The Foundation of Salvation

According to Christian tradition – in both evangelical and Orthodox theology – God’s grace (Greek: charis) and God’s mercy (Greek: eleos) are two sides of His love. Grace is the free giving of God’s goodness to those who do not deserve it; mercy is His compassion toward those who have fallen.

In our trespasses, God did not abandon us. He loved us so deeply that He sent Jesus. Through Jesus, grace and truth entered the world. Jesus does not merely bring salvation – He is salvation.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16

From the perspective of Orthodox theology, salvation is not merely a legal event in which God declares us righteous – it is a far deeper transformation: theosis, or deification. God’s grace does not simply cover our sin; it transforms us from within, making us partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). The Holy Spirit – whom the Orthodox call the Living Water and the Sanctifier – does not come to dwell at a distance. He comes to dwell within us, to heal, to sanctify, and to renew us wholly: body, soul, and spirit.

Both the evangelical and Orthodox traditions confess one truth: Salvation is God’s grace, through Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Yet all of this begins with a decision of the heart – the very decision you make when you pray the Prayer of Salvation.
