Orthodox Prayer of Liberation and Prayer of Trust to the Holy Trinity

Introduction to Orthodox Exorcism and Spiritual Liberation Theology

In the tradition of the Orthodox Church, exorcism is not as central as in some other Christian traditions. Orthodox exorcisms are essentially prayers for the removal of evil spirits’ influence rather than the casting out of demons, especially in ceremonies such as the blessing of water, the blessing of holy oil, or the blessing of holy vessels.

From an Orthodox theological perspective, the following can be considered exorcists: Christ is the exorcist par excellence, for He conquered the power of the demon. Priests, in administering the holy sacraments and proclaiming the Word of God, follow Christ’s example. All Orthodox believers are exorcists when they fight against personal sin and social evil.

Orthodox Understanding of Evil and Satan

Patristic evidence points to the fact that the cause of evil in the world is Satan. Satan was created by God as an angel who was free and, as a voluntary agent, chose to oppose God’s plan. This means that Satan is a fallen angel. Satan is not evil by nature, but by will and deed.

Orthodox teaching emphasizes:

  • In Satan there is no truth; he is absolute falsehood and deception
  • Satan is not simply the absence of good, but a positive force with free will who always chooses evil
  • Satan has under his command legions and invisible hosts together with his “satanic teachings”

Protection Against Evil in Orthodox Practice

God’s grace protects man. However, he must call upon God’s help. Constant prayer and fasting, devoted meditation, regular Bible reading, following God’s two great commandments (love of God and love of neighbor) are the Christian’s weapons against temptation from demons.

Orthodox Prayer of Liberation

Preparation for Prayer

Before the prayer of liberation, it is important to:

  • Examination of conscience – In the light of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes
  • Asking for forgiveness – Confession of sins
  • Fasting and prayer – Preparing the mind for God’s grace
  • Trust in God – Not in one’s own strength, but in God’s grace

Opening Sign of the Cross and Invocation

Opening prayer:

In the name of the Holy Trinity, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord, help me. Lord, bless me. Lord, save me.

Psalm 51 – Psalm of Repentance

(Psalm 51 is always read before the prayer of liberation)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your kindness, Blot out my transgressions according to your abundant mercy! Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions And my sin is always before me.

(the entire psalm continues)

Prayer of Forgiveness

Prayer of Repentance:

Lord, my God, I confess that I have sinned against You in thoughts, words, and deeds. I have also failed to do what Your holy law requires of me. But now, with repentance and contrition, I turn back to Your love and mercy. I ask You, forgive me all my transgressions and cleanse me from all my sins. Lord, fill my heart with the light of Your truth. Strengthen my will with Your grace. Teach me both to desire and to do only that which pleases You. Amen.

Prayer of Jesus Christ:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, Shepherd and Guardian, who gave Your life on the cross to take away the sins of the world. You forgave Peter and the woman who came to You in tears. You forgave the debts of the two debtors and also said: “whoever comes to me, I will not cast away.” Lord, receive me, a sinner, and hear my prayer of repentance.

(Confess your specific sins to the Lord)

I acknowledge my sins and transgressions, voluntary and involuntary, known and unknown. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to turn away from my sins and to amend my life according to Your teachings.

Prayer of Trust to the Holy Trinity

Prayer to the Father:

Heavenly Father, Who created all things visible and invisible, Who brought me out of the house of bondage, Who loved me before the foundation of the world, I place my trust in You.

You are my Creator, my Redeemer, my Sanctifier. You are the Source from which all good comes. I come to You not through my own righteousness, but through Your mercy.

Prayer to the Son:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, the Word, who became incarnate for our salvation, Who bore the cross and died for our sake, Who rose from the dead on the third day, Who conquered death and the grave, I place my trust in You.

Every person who looks to the cross with faith receives salvation and protection. Your cross is my hope, Your resurrection is my victory. Through Your blood I am redeemed, through Your grace I am cleansed.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit:

O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, who are everywhere present and fill all things, Treasury of blessings and Giver of Life, come graciously and abide in us and cleanse us from all impurity, O Good One, and save our souls.

Holy Spirit, You are my Comforter, my Guide, my Sanctifier. Without You I can do nothing. Come and dwell in me. Renew me. Transform me. Give me strength to live a holy life.

Prayer of Liberation from Demonic Influence

Prayer according to Saint John Chrysostom:

O eternal God, who redeemed mankind from the captivity of Satan, deliver Your servant N. from all the works of unclean spirits. Command the evil and unclean spirits and demons to depart from the soul and body of N. and not to remain or hide in him. Let them be driven out by Your own holy name and the name of Your only-begotten Son and Your life-giving Spirit from this creation of Your hands, so that after being cleansed from all demonic influences he may live holily, godly, righteously and uprightly, and be counted worthy to receive the Holy Mysteries of Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord, protect me from evil people, demons, impure passions and everything improper.

Lord, sprinkle my heart with the dew of Your grace.

Lord of heaven and earth, remember me in Your Kingdom, Your sinful and shameful servant.

Amen
