When worry for the people we love grows heavy, prayer is one of the most steadying things we can do. To pray for protection of family is to place those closest to us into God’s hands, trusting that he sees dangers we cannot see and cares for them more deeply than we ever could.
Why Pray for Your Family’s Protection?
Scripture repeatedly shows God as a shield and refuge for his people. Psalm 91 promises that he will “give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways” (Psalm 91:11, KJV). Praying for family safety is not superstition or a lack of trust. It is an act of faith that acknowledges where our true security lies.
How to Pray for Protection of Your Family
- Start with trust. Begin by thanking God for your family and for his faithfulness.
- Name each person. Pray for your spouse, children, parents and siblings by name.
- Pray over every area of life. Ask for protection of body, mind, relationships, home and spiritual life.
- Anchor your prayer in Scripture. Psalm 121:7-8 says the Lord shall preserve your “going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
- Pray consistently. Make it a daily habit, in the morning, at the table or before sleep.
Bible Verses for Family Protection
- Psalm 91:1-2: God as refuge and fortress
- Psalm 121:7-8: the Lord preserves your coming and going
- Joshua 24:15: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
- Proverbs 18:10: the name of the Lord is a strong tower
Below is a prayer you can pray on your own or together as a family.

A Powerful Prayer for Family Protection and Safety
Heavenly Father,
I come before you today with a grateful and humble heart. Thank you for the gift of my family. Thank you for every person you have placed in my home and in my life.
Lord, I ask for your protection over each one of them. Be a shield around my spouse, my children and my parents. Guard them in the day and in the night, at home and away from home, when they travel and when they rest.
Protect their bodies from harm, accident and illness. Protect their minds from fear, anxiety and discouragement. Protect their hearts from bitterness, temptation and everything that would draw them away from you.
Father, as your Word says, “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in.” Watch over every departure and every return. Let your angels keep charge over us in all our ways.
Cover our home with your peace. Let no harm enter through our doors, and let no division take root among us. Fill our household with love, patience, forgiveness and joy. Teach us to walk together in faith and to forgive as we have been forgiven.
Where we feel afraid, give us courage. Where we feel weak, be our strength. Where we cannot see the way, be our light. Help us trust that you are in control, even when circumstances seem uncertain.
Lord, I place my family in your hands. Do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Keep us close to you, now and always.
As for me and my house, we will serve you, Lord.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
